“Utang na Loob”*

Are you being used or the user?

How many of us have been used and abused? How many of us have used someone’s trust and just run away? How many of us borrowed money from a friend and promised to pay back in a certain time and yet up to now haven’t pay yet not even a single centavo? How many of us are plain dumb and playing innocent even though they know his or her so called friends are just using him/her for his/her money and fame?

Sino sa atin ang dakila? Sino ang tunay na baliw?

In the Philippines, the term “Utang na loob” is a part of our Filipino culture. It is often used as a term of respect, hospitality and gratitude. But often some takes advantage using the term literally to its meaning.

For some people utang na loob may also mean “pakikisama” or even the taking the literally the Golden Rule, “Do unto others what you want others to do unto you.” How other people will treat you reflects on how you treat them.

One of the most common example would be doing favor and expecting something in return. Magandang halimbawa would be someone borrowing money from you and promising to pay you back as soon as they can. Pero dumating yung araw na sisingilin mo sila ayon parang mga bubbles na nawala.

How many of us have become a the user or even the one being used? The recent hoopla from the Gucci Gang et al. is one of the most search and read blog in the net the past few days.

And its all because of trust and MONEY.

When people becomes comfortable with each other respect, trust and honesty comes in. Just when you become too trusting with someone, then trust is being abused.

*Utang Na Loob literally means “inner debt.” It is not a legal debt whose fulfillment is based on an external law; rather, it is a moral debt whose fulfillment is based on something within a person.
