May rice shortage nga!

Kahapon was my first full day off after coming back from the fabulous vacation. My sisters, Ann and Sakee together with my mom and my niece Yzabella went out for brunch.

We decided to have dimsum at Floata Restaurant in Vancouver. During one of my travels i noticed Vancouver has the most authentic or next to the original Chinese cooking. Most of Chinese restaurants have cooks who originated from China, you can say that most of the Chinese restaurants in Vancouver are straight from the Chinese restaurants in China.

Maaga kaming pumunta hoping to get the freshly cooked sio mai, dumplings, and among others. Their dimsum hours starts from 1030am-230pm. We were already seated around 1100am.

And so the waitress, dress in pink uniform and apron gave us the checklist and we choose what we want and gave it back to the waitress. After a few minutes some our order came, Mom’s chicken feet, my beef siomai, Ann’s shrimp dumpling and then Sakee’s spring roll.

Then my mom asked the waitress where is the steamed rice.

The waitress said, “Rice not yet cooked. Rice is short. Still buying.”

BALIK means to come back.

BAYAN means hometown or homeland.

So if you put the words together,

BALIKBAYAN means someone who is coming back home.

Balikbayan Box is filled with various gifts and goodies that range from cds, shoes, lotions, canned goods etc sent or brought by Filipinos leaving abroad to be given to relatives and friends back in their homeland, the Philippines
